Mateusz Pitala (b. 1994) is an artist, baker, and designer based in Trondheim, Norway.
He holds an MA in Fine Arts. His practice revolves around the material, symbolic, and social power of bread.  He works with a range of media—including sourdough microorganisms, sourdough fermentation, bread sculptures, ancient grains, analog photography, and fermentation-based rituals.

Baking is an integral part of his daily artistic process: a repeated act that connects him to ancestral knowledge and preserves forgotten bread traditions—standing in opposition to mass-produced food.  In his work, he collaborates with living microorganisms—the wild yeasts and bacteria present in his sourdough starter — treating them as co-authors, agents of transformation, and invisible companions in creation.
This microbial presence forms a quiet, powerful collective that shapes both the material and meaning of his works.
